I don't know how to post a list, or even if this book has been recommended before, but I loved Naomi Novik's "His Majesty's Dragon" and the subsequent sequels! I would say it is rated G/PG. It has some fighting/battle scenes, but nothing graphic. A very good read!
from the sound of it, we've all read those ones except Nanette - and everyone has really loved them!
